Thanks to everyone for the support in stopping HR669 in its current form.  Great job people!

Now, on to pressing issues.  S373 is in committee in the senate currently.  This is bill would amend the Lacey Act to add ALL PYTHONS as injurious animals.  The ramifications of this are huge if you keep anything from balls to retics.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED.  Start calling the committee and asking them what their stance is and that you oppose this bill.  The bill was introduced by Senator Nelson from Florida.  There are NO COSPONSORS currently.  Get opinion going in our favor.  Florida already has a law on the books that addresses large constrictors in their state.  There is NO NEED to make this a federal matter.

Due to uncontrollable and undocumented updates of the Windows Vista operating system along with the inconsistent behavior across the various versions of Vista, Degei cannot guarantee the installation or operation of the software.  We are currently working on the next version of the Degei Husbandry Database which will be fully compatible.

Degei has been confirmed to run on Windows Vista.  In fact, it installed and ran just fine on Vista until November of 2008 when some isolated reports of problems started coming in.  Degei DOES NOT GUARANTEE WINDOWS VISTA INSTALLATION OR OPERATION.

Here are the details:  Some installs of Vista, particularly the "64 bit" versions have a permissions issue on the C: drive, registry permissions, and operation of the BDE.  The fix for this can be found here and should be done right after the install of the trial version of Degei.

MOST people have reported to me that the above fix, when applied correctly, enables the program to work fine.  A limited number of users have reported not being able to perform the tasks listed in the instructions and therefore not been able to get the program working.

Thanks to everyone for the support over the last 5 years.  I will be concentrating on the successor of the Degei Husbandry Database and it will be better than ever.  -d

Degei recommends Windows XP Pro.  Mac OSX w/Virtual PC has been reported to work. No guarantees.  Degei has been proven to run quite nicely on new Macs that have XP loaded natively.  Degei runs on Linux under Wine.  Dream is reported to be the best.  Kubuntu works also.  It is reported that in some distributions, the photo editor may crash.  Pulling the shortcut outside of Wine may solve this problem.

Check out a sample of Degei Pro in action at Tim Tytle Lizards.

Since everybody asks about the name Degei, here's the story:  The legend goes, the greatest of all Fijian gods was Degei, the Snake god. In the beginning he lived alone, and the only living creature he knew was Turukawa the hawk. Although the hawk could not speak he was the constant companion of the god. One day Degei could not find his friend and looked everywhere for her. Days went by and at last one morning he spied the hawk sitting in some long grass. Gladly, he welcomed the bird but, to his consternation, she ignored Degei and commenced building a nest. Disappointed, he retired to his house and the next day went back to the nest and found two eggs. He then realized the hawk had found a mate and that he had lost her affection. So scooping up the eggs he took them into his own house and kept them warm with his own body. After several weeks of nurturing the eggs and wondering what would happen two shells broke and there were two tiny human bodies. Degei built them a shelter in a vesi tree and fed them on scraps of food. They grew quickly, but there was nobody to teach them except Degei. He did not understand children but when they were hungry he fed them and to save himself work he planted banana trees and root crops close to them. He also talked to them and told them about the secrets of nature. Eventually the children were fully grown and all this time had been unaware of each other's presence as Degei had placed them on opposite sides of the tree. One day the man left his shelter and as soon as he saw the maiden held out his arms to her and told her Degei had made them for each other and that their children would populate the earth. So Degei showed them how to cook the root vegetables in an earth oven. Some time later they were blessed with a little baby and Degei also was very happy as he knew that because of loneliness men and women had come into the world and would worship him as their god. According to Fiji Cultural Legend Degei also created Viti Levu and all the small islands.

Ok, so what, you ask?  Well when I was looking for a unique name to brand the software this name came up.  I have a good friend that spent a number of years in the Fijian islands for the Peace Corp.  Now what about the pronunciation? The actual Fijian pronunciation is "n-day-en-gay-ee", but I have adapted the pronunciation "De-guy".  So there you have it.
